Stay Awhile is part of my Quiet Reflection series.

This piece is part of a little series of 5 paintings. I continued to explore different techniques while painting different landscapes I love. One of the consistent things in each of these paintings was the colour Payne’s Grey, my new favourite colour. I have always used it and loved it but this year it went to a whole new level!

This piece started out very abstract with a Payne’s Grey background which was something I wanted to explore. I then added solid areas of colour in rust (burnt sienna) and a peach blush colour which created this gorgeous pop of colour in contrast to the Payne’s Grey I was hoping for.

I also used ochre and cerulean blue which then moved the piece into an abstract landscape direction creating a blue sky and rock formations (for me anyway). I was receiving stunning photos from my sister at the time that had just moved to Alice Springs (In central Australia for my overseas peeps). Wow, the colours!!! They were so rich…

I think they complemented what I had started (esp from a colour perspective) and felt like it morphed into the landscape photos she was sending me of the hills of red dirt near new new house! I titled it Stay Awhile as I would love to visit her and stay awhile to paint the surrounding landscape… with lots of powdery ochres and oil pastels and … OK, I’ll stop now!
